0551 Master of Translation and Interpreting

The cultivation program for postgraduate of professional degree

(Approved by the Degree Evaluation Sub-Committee of the School of Foreign Languages in June 2020)


According to the catalogue of the Catalogue of Degrees Awarding and Talent Cultivation Disciplines (2018), this cultivation program is formulated in accordance with the requirements of the Circular of the General Office of the Ministry of Education on Coordinating the Management of Full-time and Part-time Postgraduates (No. 2 [2016]), the Circular of the Office of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council on the Forwarding <Guidance on the Formulation of Cultivation Program for Professional Degree Postgraduates in Engineering> and Instructions (No.14 [2018] ) and other documents, and based on the Guidance on Formulating (Revising) the Cultivation Program for Postgraduates (No. 77 [2014] ) of Shandong Jianzhu University.

I. Cultivation Orientation and Objectives

This major cultivates high-level, application-oriented and professional translators who have all-round development of moral, intellectual and physical, and can meet the needs of national economy, culture and social construction. They possess proficient translation skills and broad knowledge, and can independently and qualitatively engage in translation in the fields of architecture, engineering, business, trade and commerce. Specific objectives:

1.Have a good professional ethics.

2.Have solid bilingual language skills in Chinese and English, compound knowledge structure and cross-cultural communication awareness.

3.Have the ability to apply theories and methods to solve the practical problems in construction, engineering, business, economic and trade translation.

4.Have the ability to design, organize, manage and evaluate medium-sized translation projects.

5.Have the comprehensive ability of conducting to conduct computer-assisted translation by corpus and translation software.

III. Study Methods and the Length of Schooling

The basic study period is 3 years, available in both full-time and part-time study modes.

During the period of study, the course study is 2-2.5 semesters, the professional practice is 1.5-2.5 semesters, and the report of thesis topic selection and dissertation writing are at least 2 semesters.

If students with excellent character and academic performance complete their personal cultivation plan and acquire the required credits, accomplish the dissertation and meet the quality requirements for graduation or degree awarding in advance, they can graduate or award the degree at most one year earlier. If students fail to complete their studies within the basic study period, they can apply to the university for extending their study period with the consent of their supervisors. For the relevant regulations, please refer to the Regulations on the Management of Postgraduate Studies of Shandong Jianzhu University (No. [2018] 45).

IV. Cultivation Methods and Mentorship

This program adopts a combination of course study, professional practice and dissertation for cultivation.

1. The postgraduate cultivation is based on a credit system and is conducted according to the individual cultivation plan. Postgraduates should combine scientific research and practical activities on the basis of systematic theoretical study, actively participate in beneficial social activities and public welfare work, and strengthen the exercise of scientific research ability and practical skills.

2. The university should make full use of the leading role of supervisors in guiding their postgraduates and implement the way of collective cultivation by double supervisors and discipline supervisory groups. In addition, the university actively employs experts with senior and above technical titles and rich experience in engineering field from scientific research institutes and enterprises to serve as off-campus supervisors for postgraduates, and cooperate with teachers with high academic level and rich supervisory experience to cultivate postgraduates.

3. The course study of postgraduates adopts a combination of classroom lectures, self-study and discussion, which focuses on cultivating and strengthening the self-study ability and the ability to analyze and solve problems independently.  Among them, general courses, specialized-based courses and elective courses are mainly studied intensively in schools, while joint courses of schools and enterprises, case courses and professionalism courses can be carried out in schools or enterprises. Course study and assessment are strictly implemented according to the cultivation plan and course syllabus.

4. The compulsory sessions for postgraduates are mainly composed of the following sessions:

(1) Professional practice sessions

The professional practice session should carry out for 30 weeks, which will be arranged by supervisors  from the second half of the third semester to the fourth semester. After completing the professional practice, the postgraduates shall submit a professional practice report and make a presentation, which will be collectively assessed by the discipline supervisor group. For the postgraduates who have more than half a year of work experience, they can apply for exemption from the session with the approval of their supervisors. After the completion of the dissertation selection report, the graduate students can continue to carry out professional practice in conjunction with the dissertation. The specific requirements shall be implemented in accordance with the Regulations on the Management of Professional Practice for Professional Degree Postgraduates of Shandong Jianzhu University (No. 11 [2020]) and the Basic Requirements and Assessment Methods for Professional Practice of Professional Degree Postgraduates of Foreign Languages College of Shandong Jianzhu University.

(2) The thesis topic selection report should be completed from the end of the third semester to the beginning of the fourth semester combined with the professional practice. The topic selection report should be evaluated by the discipline supervisor group and completed by the end of May in the first half of the year, as well as by the end of December in the second half of the year. The specific requirements should be in accordance with the Basic Requirements for the Selection of Topic and Thesis Report for Master's Degree of Shandong Jianzhu University (No. 73 [2007]) and the Regulations on the Organization and Implementation of the Selection Report of Master's Degree in Translation of the Foreign Languages College.

(3) The academic report extends through the whole process of school learning. During the study period, the postgraduates should listen to at least 6 academic reports or make a public academic report within the scope of their discipline, and write a summary report before graduation, which will be assessed by their supervisors.

5.The university actively carries out joint cultivation of schools and enterprises, improves the enthusiasm of enterprises, absorbs their high-quality educational resources to the postgraduate education system, which enables enterprises to play an important role in the cultivation of talents, promotes the combination of industry and education, and improves the quality of joint cultivation of schools and enterprises.

At the same time, the university actively cooperates with enterprises to build joint cultivation bases and explore a long-term guarantee mechanism and efficient operation management system for win-win cooperation.

6.All the important sessions related to the cultivation of postgraduates must be determined after collective discussion, such as whether the postgraduates pass the professional practice assessment, thesis selection report evaluation, thesis mid-term review, as well as the dissertation defense and master's degree application.

V. Curriculum and Credit Requirements

1.The cultivation plan consists of three parts: degree courses, non-degree courses and compulsory sessions. The postgraduates are required to make their individual cultivation plan under the guidance of the supervisors in the first week after admission.

2. To apply for graduation and master's degree, the total credits should be at least 38 credits, with at least 34 credits of course study, including 18 credits of degree courses, no less than 16 credits of non-degree courses and 4 credits of compulsory sessions.

Postgraduates with equivalent education level or interdisciplinary must take up no less than two undergraduate major courses, which should be included in the cultivation program, but not counted as credits.

VI. Mid-term Screening and Assessment

The mid-term assessment aims to promote the transfer of postgraduates from course study to the stage of dissertation writing, and the evaluation results will be one of the bases for approving the application for dissertation defense.

The mid-term assessment is arranged at the end of the fourth semester. Based on the personal cultivation plan of postgraduates, it will summarize and evaluate the situation of postgraduates in completing course study, professional practice and thesis selection report since their enrollment. The specific requirements are implemented according to the Mid-term Screening and Assessment Method for Postgraduates of Shandong Jianzhu University (No. 21 [2018]).

VII. Basic Requirements for Dissertation

1.Topic selection requirements of dissertation

The topic selection of dissertation should highlight practicality. Students should find topics from real interpretation, translation practice or language service practice. They can choose fields with more general translation activities, such as political diplomacy, business, tourism, literature, law or a specialized translation in a specific field. They can also choose topics in the language service industry, including translation, technology, management and other related aspects. In addition, they can choose translation market analysis, the relationship between translation and national strategy, translation project management, translation technology application, and other aspects for investigation or research.

The topic should not be too large, and it should be combined with the actual needs of the translation profession and industry, highlighting the practical significance and application value of the topic. The college encourages students to enter the society and industry to collect data, investigate and analyze in practice, and put forward new opinions on the development of translation major and industry.

2. Time requirement of dissertation

The dissertation should be completed independently under the guidance of the supervisor. The dissertation writing is generally not less than 12 months, counting from the date of passing the review of the dissertation selection report to the date of the dissertation defense.

3. Literature reading requirement of dissertation

The literature review should provide a clear description and analysis of the domestic and foreign situation of the research topic. The dissertation should have at least 30 references, with no less than 60% in the last 5 years and a certain number of foreign references in principle.

4. Requirements of dissertation standards

The dissertation writing should conform to the Basic Requirements of Master's Degree Dissertation of Shandong Jianzhu University, and should also meet the Supplementary Requirements for Master's Degree Dissertation in Translation of the Foreign Languages College.

5. Form of dissertation

The dissertation can take the following forms (students can choose any one of them):

(1) Translation internship report. Under the guidance of their supervisors, students can participate in translation internships (focusing on positions related to project managers, project translators and project revisers in the language service industry) and write an internship report of at least 15,000 foreign words on the internship process. The internship report of the project manager post should include project background introduction, project plan, project implementation evaluation, technology application summary, teamwork evaluation and user satisfaction survey.  The internship report of project translation should include the introduction of translation task background, demand analysis, time management, tools usage, translation quality control, and focus on summarizing the problems encountered in the translation process, measures taken, and experience gained. The project reviewer internship report should include the quality standards, time management, tools usage, quality control, and quality assessment of this assignment. The translation internship report can write about the observed problems and personal experience during the internship process, and put forward suggestions for improvement.

(2) Translation practice report. Under the guidance of their supervisors, students majoring in Translation can select a text never been translated before with no less than 10,000 Chinese characters, and they write an analysis report of no less than 15,000 foreign words on the problems encountered in the process of translation. Students majoring in Interpretation can describe and analyze the interpretation task assumed by them under the guidance of their supervisors, which should include the transcription of not less than 10,000 Chinese characters or foreign words in the interpretation recording, and write an analysis report of not less than 15,000 foreign words on the problems encountered in the translation process. The content of the translation practice report includes task description, task process, case analyses and practice summary and so on.

(3) Translation experiment report. Under the guidance of their supervisors, students conduct an experiment on a part of the interpretation, translation or language service industry, and analyze the process and results of the experiment, and then write an experimental report of not less than 15,000 foreign words, including the task description (experimental purpose, experimental object, experimental methods), the process of the task (hypothesis, variables, operational definition, selection of subjects, organization of the experiment, collection of experimental data) and the analysis of experimental results and conclusion.

(4) Translation research report. Under the guidance of their supervisors, students conduct research and analysis on translation-related issues such as translation policy, translation industry and translation phenomena, including task description (research purpose, research subjects, research methods), task process (selection of subjects, organization of research, collection of research data), analysis of research results and conclusions and suggestions of the research, with no less than 15,000 foreign words.

(5) Translation research thesis. Under the guidance of their supervisors, students can research on a certain issue of translation and write a research thesis with no less than 15,000 foreign words, including research significance, research objectives, research questions, literature reviews, theoretical framework, research methods, case analyses, conclusions and recommendations.

All of the above types of dissertations should contain the following:

Cover page: dissertation title (in Chinese and English), author, supervisor, discipline category, major, cultivation unit, completion date, as well as the classification number and confidentiality level of the dissertation.

Title page: dissertation title, the name and project number of the funded project, the number of pages, tables and illustrations in the dissertation, as well as the name of the reviewer, the name of supervisor, the Dean of the student's college, and the completion date of the dissertation.

Statement: the originality statement and a statement on the authorization of the use of the thesis (which must be signed by the author and the supervisor), the content of the statement unified by the university.

Chinese and English abstracts and keywords, the abstracts with no more than 800 words.

Thesis catalog.

The main part of the dissertation contains the introduction (topic selection basis, literature review), the body of the dissertation (research content and results), and the conclusion and outlook.

References.

Necessary appendix, questionnaire design, original (first-hand) experimental data or survey data, etc.

Acknowledgements.

Academic and professional practice results achieved during the master's degree program.

6. Dissertation content quality requirements

The dissertation is required to reflect the professional and vocational characteristics of the translation and language service industry in the topic selection.  It should address specific issues in translation practice, translation management, translation market and industry, translation technology and tools usage, and should have a certain theoretical and practical value. The research results can contribute to the construction of translation disciplines, the development of translation theory and practice, the management of the translation industry, and the application of translation technology, and have certain social and economic benefits and application values.

The dissertation is highly innovative in terms of research methodology, research content, use of technology, text selection, and analytical perspective. The dissertation is correctly and thoughtfully designed to accurately grasp the current state of the problems to be studied, with a comprehensive use of theories, methods and technical tools solving the problems identified. In addition, the argumentative process is complete, the analysis is logical, and the conclusions or results are reliable.

The dissertation should be written in foreign language, which should be correct, clear, and flowing, with strong organization and no grammatical and typographical errors, misspellings, improper punctuation, and other mistakes. Translation practice and translation cases require a correct translation, and should be expressed smoothly without mistranslation. The structure of the dissertation should be complete with clear diagrams, and it should conform to academic norms in terms of formatting and layout, citation, labeling, and references.

7. Regulations on the form of academic achievements

The master students in this discipline should meet the requirements no less than the document of Regulations on Postgraduates Academic Dissertations of Shandong Jianzhu University (Trial) (No. 6 [2019]).

VIII. Dissertation Mid-term Evaluation, Pre-defense, Review and Defense

1. The mid-term evaluation and pre-defense system of the dissertation should be implemented before the postgraduates apply for the defense of the dissertation, and the specific requirements are implemented according to the relevant regulations of the school and Regulations on the Organization and Implementation of Mid-term Evaluation of the Dissertations for Masters Degree of Foreign Languages College, Regulations on the Organization and Implementation of Pre-defense of the Dissertations for Masters Degree of Foreign Languages College.

2. After completing the dissertation, the postgraduates can apply for the dissertation defense with the consent of their supervisors. Before the defense, the university or the college will organize the misconduct detection and the dissertation review, and the dissertation defense can be organized only after the detection is qualified according to the basic requirements of the work of pre-defense, defense application, dissertation review, dissertation defense and degree application for postgraduates of Shandong Jianzhu University (No. 16 [2015]).

IX. Degree Application and Award

The application and award of master's degree shall be reviewed and approved in accordance with the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Academic Degrees, the Interim Implementation Measures of the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Academic Degrees and the Rules of Shandong Jianzhu University on Degree Awarding (No. 58 [2015]).

1. The postgraduates who have completed the required credits according to their individual cultivation plan and are approved by the Dissertation Defense Committee and recommended to award the degree can apply for the master's degree. The degree certificate will be issued to those who are recommended to confer the degree after consideration by the Sub-committee on Degree Evaluation and approved by the Academic Degree Evaluation Committee of the University.

2. If the postgraduates completed the required credits according to the individual cultivation plan and are approved by the Dissertation Defense Committee, but do not meet the requirements of academic achievements, the Sub-committee on Degree Evaluation will consider and make a proposal to defer the award of degree. After they meet the relevant regulations, the Sub-committee on Degree Evaluation will consider and make the recommendation of awarding the degree, as well as the Academic Degree Evaluation Committee. Then the degree certificate will be issued to those postgraduates.

X. Graduation

1. Students who have obtained the degree are granted graduation.

2.Students who have passed the defense of the dissertation and received the recommendation of the committee to confer the degree, but have not met the regulations of academic achievement, are also granted graduation.

XI. Other Requirements

1. During the study period, the postgraduates should abide by the national laws and regulations, the Regulations of Shandong Jianzhu University for Postgraduates, the Regulations of Shandong Jianzhu University on Academic Ethics for Postgraduates (Trial) and other university rules and regulations, as well as the teaching regulations and requirements of the majors for each cultivation session.

2. The university encourages postgraduates to actively participate in the innovative program projects and activities related to postgraduate education organized by the state, Shandong Province and the university during their study period.

XII. Program Approval and Implementation

1.This program is approved by the Degree Evaluation Subcommittee of the Foreign Languages College and submitted to the Graduate Office for review and filing.

2. This program has been approved by the principal and has been implemented since 2020.

3. Once the program is determined, it shall not be arbitrarily changed in principle. If there is any partial revision during the implementation, it is necessary to fill in the " Approval Form for Course Adjustment of Postgraduate Cultivation Program" and report it to the Postgraduate Office for review and filing.
